*gives* follows the early Greek reading δίδωσιν in P45, the original hand of Sinaiticus, and Codex Bezae. Most Greek manuscripts read τίθησιν, “lays down.” Old Syriac S reads “gives,” and Aphrahat and Ephrem preserve the same wording in early Syriac reception. See Variant Exceptions.
