If a soul sins, and commits a trespass against [the name of the Speech of] Yahweh, and deals falsely with his associate in a matter of deposit, or of bargain, or of robbery, or has oppressed his associate;[fn]

associate. This word generally refers to people who do business with each another. This is the same concept behind the word 'associate' in these other verses: Leviticus 18:20, 19:11, 19:15, 19:17, 24:19, 25:14, 25:15, 25:17 and Zechariah 13:7.
