generals: the chiliarchos or leader of 1000 soldiers. This was the equivalent of the Roman tribunus militum, a commander of a cohort which was about 600 men. Although this would be roughly equivalent to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel or higher, in context it likely refers to the highest ranking officers. Accordingly it is translated as 'generals'.
