Thyine
Thyine names an aromatic wood that appears once in scripture, in the inventory of luxury cargo lamented over the fall of Babylon. It belongs to the catalogue of fine materials whose trade is cut off when the great commercial city collapses.
An Aromatic Wood Among Babylon's Cargo
The wood appears in the merchants' lament in Revelation 18, packed between precious metals, fabrics, and other costly goods: "merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stone, and pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet; and all thyine wood, and every vessel of ivory, and every vessel made of most precious wood, and of bronze, and iron, and marble" (Rev 18:12). The placement — alongside ivory, "most precious wood," and worked metals — fixes thyine among the high-end materials whose absence the merchants of the earth will mourn when Babylon falls.
