Psalms, Chapter 2

1 Why do the nations rage, And the peoples meditate a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against Yahweh, and against his anointed, [saying,]
3 Let us break apart their bonds, And cast away from us their cords.
4 He who sits in the heavens will laugh: [The Speech of] the Lord will have them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, And in his intense displeasure, he will vex them:
6 Yet I have set my king On Zion my holy hill.
7 I will tell of the decree: Yahweh said to me, You are my son; This day I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will give [you] the nations for your inheritance; And for your possession, the uttermost parts of the earth.
9 You will shepherd them with a rod of iron; Like a potter's vessel, you will dash them in pieces.[fn]
10 Now therefore you⁺ kings, be wise; Be instructed, you⁺ judges of the earth.
11 Serve Yahweh with fear, And rejoice with trembling.
12 Embrace purity, or else he will be angry, and you⁺ will perish in the way, For his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all those who take refuge in [his Speech].[fn]

Footnotes

9

shepherd, traditionally read 'break'. 'Shepherd' follows the LXX and the Hebrew in the MT, but with different vowel pointing.

12

Embrace purity partly follows LXX interpretation (i.e. 'accept correction' or 'embrace discipline'). MT could be literally, 'Kiss cleanness/purity'. Some interpret this as 'Kiss the son' possibly by textual correction or accepting an Aramaic definition in this Hebrew text.
