1 Corinthians — Footnotes

Chapter 1

1:1 — called, in verses 1, 2, and 24: see footnote at Romans 1:1. Note in verse 2, the word 'called' has a different meaning than the word 'call'.

Chapter 6

6:9 — That is, men who behave, dress, or otherwise have characteristic(s) similar to women.

Chapter 7

7:1 — have any sex with a woman: Literally, 'touch a woman'. See this Greek word used in the Septuagint in similar contexts at: Genesis 20:4 (come near), 20:6 (touch), and Proverbs 6:29 (touches).

7:14 — accepted is literally 'holy' or 'made holy'. unaccepted is literally 'unclean'. In this verse, these terms refer to the acceptance/legitimacy before God of the relationship to these family members. This does not mean that any aspect of salvation or eternal hope is given to these family members because of their family relationship to a believer.

7:27 — Verse 27 has been translated based on the immediate context. It literally reads: Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife.

Chapter 9

9:5 — sister, refers to a woman believer, not a sister by blood or immediate family.

9:24 — race, literally, 'stadion'. A stadion was about 600 feet. This could also refer to a place where a race was held with a course of this length.

Chapter 10

10:11 — the ends of the [past] ages may be similar in meaning to 'the end of an era'. See also Hebrews 9:26.

10:25 — food market': most likely a collection of stores with meat as well as other types of food. Some sources define it as just the 'meat market'.

Chapter 12

12:3 — Accursed Jesus, literally 'Anathema Jesus'. This means to reject and place Jesus under a curse. See other uses of 'anathema' at Rom 9:3, 1 Cor 12:3, 16:22, and Gal 1:8-9.

Chapter 15

15:6 — stay, that is, 'remain alive'.
