Chapter 1
1:5 — Seventy-five follows the LXX reading. The Hebrew text reads 'seventy'. See footnote at Genesis 46:19 for more information.
Chapter 3
3:14 — I AM WHO ALWAYS IS in this verse is literally, 'I AM WHO I AM'. The words translated 'I AM' and 'ALWAYS IS' are based on the same word in Hebrew. However, it is in a form which can be in the present, past, or future depending on the context. For example, it is the same word translated as "I was" in Psalm 50:21, "I am" in Ruth 2:13, and "I will be" in Exodus 3:12. It is likely that 'who always is' in this verse has essentially the same meaning as 'who is and who was and who is to come' in Revelation 1:4, 1:8 and 4:8. See also Targum Pseudo-Jonathan at Exodus 3:14.
3:15 — Yahweh, relates to the similar Hebrew word 'I AM' in verse 14. Accordingly, verse 14 appears to serve as the basis for the name 'Yahweh' introduced in verse 15.
Chapter 10
10:11 — prominent men. See the Appendix under gender for more information.
Chapter 15
15:2 — Yah, a contracted form of 'Yahweh' throughout the Old Testament.
Chapter 21
21:6 — gods here means judges, see footnotes at Psalm 82:1 and Exodus 22:9.
21:8 — betrayed, that is, deliberately broke promises and/or loyalty on which others had relied.
Chapter 22
22:8 — gods here means judges, see footnotes at Psalm 82:1 and Exodus 22:9.
22:9 — gods here means judges, see footnotes at Psalm 82:1 and Exodus 22:9.
22:9 — gods here means judges, see footnote at Psalm 82:1. Of special importance to this translation is that the verb for 'will condemn' is in the plural form. If this were meant to refer to 'God', a singular verb would be expected. Although the Hebrew word for 'God' is plural in form, it normally uses a singular verb. Hence, the translation here is 'gods' which means 'judges' as noted in Psalm 82:1.
22:28 — gods here means judges, see footnotes at Psalm 82:1 and Exodus 22:9.
Chapter 23
23:15 — will appear before me. This text was originally, 'will see my face'. HOTTP indicates this text originally contained the active form such as 'one will see'. However, it recommends 'will appear before' here since it is the earliest attested text. This is a theological correction by scribes to eliminate the active meaning and replace it with the passive meaning. See also, Exo 23:17; 34:20, 23, 24; Deu 16:16, 31:11, 1Sam 1:22, Psa 42:2, 84:7, Isa 1:12. Especially Exo 34:24 and Psa 42:3. For interpretation of seeing one's face, see similar phrasing in Gen 44:23-26.
23:17 — will appear before the Sovereign Yahweh is the earliest attested text, but was originally, 'will see the face of the Sovereign Yahweh'. See Exo 23:15.
Chapter 34
34:20 — will appear before me is the earliest attested text, but was originally, 'will see my face'. See Exo 23:15.
34:23 — appear before the Sovereign Yahweh is the earliest attested text, but was originally, 'see the face of the Sovereign Yahweh'. See Exo 23:15.
34:24 — to see the face of Yahweh reads 'to appear before Yahweh' in the earliest attested text. See note at Exo 23:15. However here and at Deu. 31:11, the original is put in the text body even though it is not the earliest attested text. This type of change was outside the scope of HOTTP/CTAT but is made here by the publisher based on HOTTP remarks at Exo 23:15 and CTAT's discussion at Isa 1:12.
Chapter 40
40:31 — it refers to the basin.
