Chapter 6

6:14 — Hebrew nests [and] nests

Chapter 9

9:10 — from all those coming out of the ark to all the beasts of the earth, indicates two categories: first those which came out of the ark, and then those which live thereafter. This parallels the structure of verse 9 which applies to those present now and those who will be afterwards. See HOTTP.

11:5 — See footnote at Psalm 49:2.

Chapter 16

16:4 — mistress refers to a woman having authority or control over something or someone.

Chapter 19

19:8 — had any sex, see the Definitions section of the Appendix.

19:17 — he said, The two men represent God. So when they speak in his name, their message is introduced by the singular 'he said' instead of 'they said'. See HOTTP.

19:22 — Zoar, in Hebrew this name sounds like the word for 'little one' used in verses 20 and 21.

Chapter 20

20:4 — had not had any sex with her, literally: 'had not come near her'. See footnote at 1 Corinthians 7:1.

20:6 — have any sex with her, literally: 'to touch her'. See footnote at 1 Corinthians 7:1.

20:16 — A shekel was a unit of weight equal to about 1/3 of a troy ounce.

Chapter 26

26:19 — living water - this phrase was previously translated in this verse as 'springing water'. However, for consistency in the literal translation, it is translated as 'living water' here and at John 4:10,11,14; Lev 14:5,50; 15:13; Num 19:17; Song 4:15; Jer 2:13; 17:13; and Zech 14:8. The reader may use the context to determine the meaning in each verse.

26:33 — Shibah means oath or seven.

Chapter 31

31:19 — Talismans from the Hebrew: teraphim. Objects believed to possess mystical or occult powers. They can vary in size from a small lucky charm to something larger sized such as a statue. They can be in the shape of a person, animal, or other object. They may have images or other engravings. Also see Nuzi tablets for significance.

Chapter 41

41:8 — sacred scholars. The literal transliteration is believed to be the Egyptian title of 'chief lector-priest'. That is, one who is head of those who are in charge of the sacred writings. This may have also included a connotation of being magicians. See Ward in Bibsac 114:453, Jan 1957, for more information.

Chapter 42

42:11 — sons of one man. Similar to the phrase 'sons of a man', except the word 'one' is present. Also in verse 13. See footnote at Psalm 49:2.

Chapter 45

45:8 — These three titles within quotation marks are very similar to actual titles given to Egyptian officials. See Ward in Bibsac 114.453, Jan 1957 for more information.

Chapter 46

46:19 — Current texts of Genesis 46:19-22, 46:26-27, and Exodus 1:5 are likely to contain errors. These passages are reconstructed based on a comparison of LXX, MT, HOTTP, as well as Philo's 1 Chronicles 7:14 (Yonge's Translation). See CTAT at 1 Chronicles 7:14. See also footnote at Exodus 1:5.

46:26 — See footnote at Genesis 46:19.

Chapter 47

47:5 — Genesis 47:5-6 follows LXX per HOTTP.
