Chapter 1
1:12 — to see my face is the earliest attested text and HOTTP recommendation here. See also Psa 42:2 and 84:7, and Exo 23:15 note. The traditional reading here would be: 'to appear before me'. See also CTAT.
Chapter 3
3:12 — creditors is the translation preferred by HOTTP and CTAT. The alternate translation is 'women' based on the same Hebrew consonants.
3:20 — houses of the soul is the literal translation for perfume boxes.
Chapter 5
5:9 — See similar phrase at Isa 22:14.
Chapter 7
7:14 — young woman, this follows the Hebrew. The Septuagint reads 'virgin'. See The Virgin Birth for the full discussion.
7:14 — Immanuel, see also 8:8 and 8:10.
Chapter 8
8:10 — God is with us, in Hebrew: 'Immanuel'. See also 7:14 and 8:8.
Chapter 9
9:19 — darkened, or possibly, 'burned up'. See CTAT.
Chapter 13
13:12 — common man, see Appendix under gender for definition of common man versus man.
Chapter 14
14:29 — all the words relating to serpent, adder, and fruit are masculine singular in this verse.
Chapter 22
22:19 — he refers to his lord in verse 18.
Chapter 38
38:8 — [I will move back] the sun here resumes and compliments the beginning of the verse, 'I will move back'.
38:20 — Verses 21 and 22 are likely to be secondary additions based on DSS evidence. HOTTP recommends their omission or placing them in a note. The text of these two verses would read: 21 Now Isaiah had said, Let them take a cake of figs, and lay it for a plaster on the boil, and he will recover. 22 Hezekiah also had said, What is the sign that I will go up to the house of Yahweh?
Chapter 43
43:19 — paths, or alternatively 'rivers'. See HOTTP and CTAT.
Chapter 47
47:13 — horoscopes, literally, 'in the new moons what will happen to you'.
Chapter 52
52:14 — Anointing, traditionally: 'disfigured'. See CTAT Vol. 2 pp. 385-395.
Chapter 56
56:11 — excessive desire, this phrase is also used at Sirach 6:4.
Chapter 57
57:3 — psychic, i.e. an interpreter of omens.
57:8 — you have looked at the hand can mean either: 'when you have seen the penis', or, 'when you have the opportunity'. See HOTTP.
