Jeremiah — Footnotes

Chapter 2

2:11 — exchanged my glory. Literally, 'exchanged his glory'. Some translations have, 'exchanged their glory'. The original here may have just been, 'exchanged me'. See CTAT and variant exceptions in the Appendix.

Chapter 5

5:7 — they dwell at a prostitute's house. That is, they are accustomed to visiting it frequently.

Chapter 6

6:15 — This refers to the people regarding these prophets as shameful persons. The clause which follows refers to feeling shame. See also verse 8:12 and HOTTP.

Chapter 8

8:6 — race, as in manner of running. See similar uses of 'running' at 2Sa 18:27.

8:12 — See footnote at verse 6:15.

Chapter 10

10:19 — me. Although this is singular it has a collective meaning. It is the people who speak. Also in verse 24.

10:24 — me. See footnote at verse 19.

Chapter 17

17:3 — The expression refers to a dweller of the country who goes to the mountain, probably to celebrate an idolatrous rite there. (See CTAT)

Chapter 18

18:14 — rock of Shaddai may refer to one of the peaks of the Antilebanon mountains.

Chapter 19

19:1 — the bottle mentioned was a narrow-mouthed ceramic jar used for drinking water.

Chapter 22

22:18 — best brother is based on a reading listed in Field's Hexapla which is literally 'beloved brother'. Hebrew reads, 'sister'. See Appendix.

Chapter 27

27:2 — Verse 1 was added by a secondary source to the text at a later time. This addition reads: 'In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, came this word to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,' See HOTTP/CTAT. LXX omits this verse.

27:9 — i.e. interpreters of omens

Chapter 28

28:1 — This text is most likely closer to original, and based on LXX. MT may include secondary sources and reads: 'And it came to pass the same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year'.

Chapter 32

32:12 — my cousin - on the father's side.

Chapter 33

33:4 — See CTAT regarding verse division here. Also see context at Jer 32:24.

Chapter 37

37:15 — prison, in this instance it is literally 'house of binding'.

Chapter 38

38:28 — And it came to pass that Jerusalem was taken. Some interpret that verse 28 should be divided, with this last part moved to Chapter 39.

Chapter 39

39:8 — house. This may have a collective meaning, as in the residences of the people.

Chapter 48

48:2 — Madmen is the Hebrew name of a town.

Chapter 51

51:1 — Leb-kamai, this expression means "the Heart of my adversaries" and is believed to refer to the Chaldeans.
