Matthew — Footnotes

Chapter 1

1:1 — UPDV Matthew is a reconstructed text with renumbered chapters and verses. See The Book of Matthew.

1:2 — begot when referring to a man generally means to become the father of.

1:6 — from the wife of Uriah follows the Old Syriac and Peshitta. CT reads, "from her who was Uriah's".

1:16 — See Joseph Begot Jesus: The Active Reading at Matthew 1:16.

1:22 — Ten minas. A mina was worth about 100 days' wages.

Chapter 2

2:2 — was known as being, compare the similar phrasing at Luke 3:23 and see footnote there.

Chapter 3

3:5 — A denarius was a Roman coin worth about one day's wages. It contained about 1/8 of a troy ounce of silver.

Chapter 5

5:21 — lack of self-control, could also be translated as 'self-indulgence'.

5:43 — An assarion. A Roman coin worth about 1/16 of a day's wages.

Chapter 7

7:2 — captain, or centurion. This rank commanded about 100 men.

7:22 — Instead of children, CT recommends placing 'works' here, but it is not certain (Level C). See Variant Exceptions for details.

7:28 — girl. It is believed she was born in the year 10 A.D. This would make her about 15-20 years old depending on the year of this event.

7:29 — The text of verses 23 - 29 appears to be genuine; however, the location of them here is uncertain. UPDV has placed them here to match them to an apparently suitable context. See The Book of Matthew.

7:10 — The text of verses 6 - 10 appears to be genuine; however, the location of them here is uncertain. UPDV has placed them here to match them to an apparently suitable context. See The Book of Matthew.

7:17 — left to you+, follows Old Syriac. CT reads: 'left to you+ desolate'.

Chapter 8

8:20 — the multitudes, literally, 'them'.

Chapter 10

10:23 — Literally, 'many stadia'. Probably a distance of at least a mile. A stadion was about 600 feet.

Chapter 11

11:19 — The text of verses 18 and 19 appears to be genuine; however, the location of the text here is uncertain. UPDV has placed them here to match them to an apparently similar context. See The Book of Matthew.

Chapter 14

14:1 — Jesus, literally, 'he'.

14:9 — The text of verse 9 appears to be genuine; however, the location of the text here is uncertain. UPDV has placed it here to match it to an apparently similar context. Compare Luke 10:16. Also see The Book of Matthew.

Chapter 24

24:15 — detestable thing, traditionally 'abomination'

Chapter 26

26:17 — Return, literally, 'turn away'.

Chapter 27

27:15 — battalion, or a cohort. It consisted of about 600 men. It was also a tenth of a legion.
