because it does not go into the heart, but into the belly, and all food that is cast outside is not [considered] unclean?[fn]

UPDV follows the Syriac Sinaiticus here, which is literally: "goes into the belly, and is cast outside, and all food is made clean." This reading describes the process of digestive elimination — what enters the body goes into the belly, passes through, and what comes out does not make one ritually unclean.
