Psalms, Chapter 42

1 BOOK II. For the Chief Musician. Maschil of the sons of Korah.
As a doe pants after the water brooks,So my soul pants after you, O God.
2
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God:When shall I come and see the face of God?[fn]
3
My tears have been my food day and night,While they continually say to me, Where is your God?
4
These things I remember, and pour out my soul inside me,How I went with the throng, and led them to the house of God,With the voice of joy and praise, a multitude keeping holyday.
5
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And [why] are you disquieted inside me?Hope in God; for I will yet praise him, My salvation[fn]
6 and my God.
My soul is cast down inside me:Therefore I remember you from the land of the Jordan,And the Hermons, from the hill Mizar.
7
Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls:All your waves and your billows have gone over me.
8
[Yet] Yahweh will command his loving-kindness in the daytime; And in the night his song will be with me,[Even] a prayer to the God of my life.
9
I will say to God my rock, Why have you forgotten me?Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
10
With a sword in my bones, my adversaries reproach me,While they continually say to me, Where is your God?
11
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted inside me?Hope in God; for I will yet praise him,My salvation and my God.

see the face of God is the earliest attested text and HOTTP recommendation here. The traditional reading here would be: 'appear before God'. See also Exo 23:15 note.

5

my salvation is literally, 'the salvation of my face'. Also at 42:11, and 43:5. For verse division, see HOTTP.
