Abaddon

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Abaddon is the Hebrew name of the angel who rules as king over the abyss, a figure introduced in the vision of the fifth trumpet in Revelation.

The Angel of the Abyss

When the fifth trumpet sounds in Rev 9, a host of locust-like creatures emerges from the abyss to torment humanity. Over this host stands a ruler: "They have over them as king the angel of the abyss: his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek [tongue] he has the name Apollyon" (Rev 9:11). The verse supplies both the Hebrew name Abaddon — meaning destruction — and its Greek equivalent Apollyon, meaning destroyer, making plain that the two names point to the same figure and the same meaning across languages.
