Abdeel

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Abdeel is identified in the UPDV as the father of Shelemiah, one of the royal officers dispatched by King Jehoiakim to arrest Jeremiah and Baruch.

Father of Shelemiah

After Jehoiakim heard the scroll of Jeremiah read and cut it into the fire, he ordered the arrest of the prophet and his scribe: "The king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but Yahweh hid them" (Jer 36:26). Abdeel is named only through his son's role in this failed arrest; the brief notice that Yahweh hid the two men closes the episode before the officers' mission could succeed.
