Abishalom

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Abishalom is named twice in the Kings record as the father of Maacah, the queen mother through whom the Davidic succession passes to Abijam and Asa. The form is a longer variant of Absalom.

Father of Maacah

In Abijam's accession notice the line reads: "He reigned three years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom" (1Ki 15:2).

The same identification reappears in the Asa notice that follows: "And forty and one years he reigned in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Maacah the daughter of Abishalom" (1Ki 15:10). Maacah is the queen mother across both reigns, and Abishalom stands behind both kings as her father.
