Abital

Abital is a wife of David named only in the two parallel lists of David's Hebron-born sons. She appears once each in Samuel and Chronicles, in both cases as the mother of Shephatiah, David's fifth son.

Mother of Shephatiah

The Hebron list in 2 Samuel places her at the fifth position: "and the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital" (2Sa 3:4). The chronicler's parallel keeps the same ordering and names her again with Shephatiah: "the fifth, Shephatiah of Abital; the sixth, Ithream by Eglah his wife" (1Ch 3:3). In both notices Abital appears only by name, fixed to the son she bears.
