Adamah

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Adamah is a city of Naphtali, named within the tribal allotment of Joshua 19. The name appears in the list of Naphtali's fortified cities, while a related border-name "Adaminekeb" sits at the head of the same allotment.

On the Naphtali Border and in the Fortified-City List

The Naphtali border opens with a related name in the UPDV: "And their border was from Heleph, from the oak in Zaanannim, and Adaminekeb, and Jabneel, to Lakkum; and the goings out of it were at the Jordan" (Jos 19:33). The border then runs westward and ties Naphtali to Zebulun, Asher, and the Jordan boundary (Jos 19:34).

Adamah itself sits in the catalogue of Naphtali's fortified cities a few verses later: "And the fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth, and Adamah, and Ramah, and Hazor" (Jos 19:35-36). Adamah stands in this list among the strongholds of Naphtali, paired with Ramah and Hazor.
