Adnah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Two military men named Adnah surface in the Chronicler — one a Manassite captain who joined David at Ziklag, the other a chief of Judah's forces under Jehoshaphat.

A Captain of Manasseh at Ziklag

Adnah is listed first among the Manassites who came over to David during his Ziklag exile: "As he went to Ziklag, there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zillethai, captains of thousands who were of Manasseh" (1Ch 12:20). The notice classes him as a captain of thousands, one of the seven Manassite officers whose defection strengthened David's hand.

Captain over Judah under Jehoshaphat

In the muster of Jehoshaphat's army, Adnah heads the largest division: "And this was the numbering of them according to their fathers' houses: Of Judah, the captains of thousands: Adnah the captain, and with him mighty men of valor three hundred thousand" (2Ch 17:14). He is the lead figure in the kingdom's military census, set over a force three hundred thousand strong.
