Adonikam

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Adonikam is a clan-head among those who return from Babylon. The name is preserved in two parallel returnee lists, with slightly different totals, and the same family appears under the variant "Adonijah" among the leaders who seal Nehemiah's covenant.

In the Returnee Lists

The first census of those who came back with Zerubbabel records: "The sons of Adonikam, six hundred sixty and six" (Ezr 2:13). Nehemiah's parallel list gives a slightly different count: "The sons of Adonikam, six hundred threescore and seven" (Ne 7:18). The family is named in both registers as a single returning house.

Sealing the Covenant

Among the leaders who put their hand to the renewed covenant in Nehemiah's day, the name appears in its alternate form: "Adonijah, Bigvai, Adin" (Ne 10:16). The Adonijah of this list is the same clan-head whose family is otherwise spelled "Adonikam" in the returnee census.
