Ajalon
Ajalon (also spelled Aijalon) names more than one site in the biblical land — a Danite border-town in the Shephelah that becomes a Levitical city, a separate burial-place in Zebulun, a Judahite stronghold along the Philistine frontier, and the valley over which the moon is commanded to halt on the day Yahweh delivers the Amorites. The texts spread the name across the conquest narrative, the tribal allotments, the priestly city-rosters, the judges-cycle, the Saulide wars, and the divided-monarchy fortification and invasion lists.
The Danite Border-Town
The first Ajalon enters the record inside the seventh-lot allotment to the tribe of Dan, listed beside Shaalabbin and Ithlah: "and Shaalabbin, and Aijalon, and Ithlah," (Jos 19:42). The name sits without comment in the city-roster, fixing Ajalon as one member of Dan's tribal inheritance.
When the Amorites refuse to be dislodged from that inheritance, Ajalon is named as one of three settlement-points they hold against the sons of Dan: "but the Amorites determined to dwell in mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to slave labor" (Jud 1:35). Ajalon is exhibited here as a Danite-territory holdout that ends under Joseph-house prevailing as forced-labor tribute rather than as expulsion.
The Levitical City of Refuge
Ajalon's Danite inheritance status feeds directly into the priestly city-rosters. In the Levitical allotment it is given to the Kohathites with its surrounding pasture-land: "Aijalon with its suburbs, and Jibleam with its suburbs; four cities" (Jos 21:24). The Chronicler's parallel roster repeats the same Kohathite assignment: "and Aijalon with its suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with its suburbs;" (1Ch 6:69).
The city resurfaces in the Saulide war against the Philistines as the western terminus of a day-long pursuit that begins at Michmash: "And they struck of the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very faint;" (1Sa 14:31). The from-Michmash / to-Aijalon pair bounds the slaughter-corridor across which the battle-day runs out, and the closing clause notes the troops' fatigue at the far end of the line.
The Zebulun Burial-Site
A second, distinct Ajalon lies in Zebulun and figures only in the death-notice of one of the minor judges: "And Elon the Zebulunite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun" (Jud 12:12). The qualifier "in the land of Zebulun" separates this Ajalon from the Danite Shephelah town of the same name.
The Judahite Stronghold
A third Ajalon belongs to the Judah-Benjamin frontier under the divided monarchy. Rehoboam includes it in his ring of fortified cities: "and Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities" (2Ch 11:10). In the reign of Ahaz the Philistines reverse the direction of pressure and seize the same town along with its lowland neighbors: "The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the lowland, and of the South of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, and Aijalon, and Gederoth, and Soco with its towns, and Timnah with its towns, Gimzo also and its towns: and they dwelt there" (2Ch 28:18). Ajalon is exhibited across these two notices as a Shephelah border-point that changes hands between Judah and Philistia as the frontier shifts.
The Valley of the Standstill
The most prominent appearance is the valley, paired with Gibeon in the two-luminary command on the day Yahweh delivers the Amorite coalition: "Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh in the day when Yahweh delivered up the Amorites before the sons of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand still on Gibeon; And, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon" (Jos 10:12). The speech-verb has Joshua as subject in Israel's sight, the sun-command fixes the day-luminary over Gibeon, and the paired moon-command fixes the night-luminary in the valley of Aijalon. The valley-name thus marks the moon's stationary point in the sky over the same Shephelah corridor through which the Danite city, Levitical refuge, Saulide pursuit-line, and Judahite-Philistine frontier all run.
