Akan

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Akan is named in UPDV in the Edomite (Horite) genealogies as a son of Ezer.

A Son of Ezer the Horite

The catalogue of Esau's land in Genesis 36 turns to the Horite chiefs who held Seir before him. In the line of Ezer, Akan appears in the third position: "These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan and Zaavan and Akan" (Ge 36:27). The Chronicler repeats the same triplet with only minor divergence in punctuation: "The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, and Zaavan, Akan. The sons of Dishan: Uz, and Aran" (1Ch 1:42).

A Wilderness Place-Name

The wilderness itinerary in Deuteronomy preserves a related form in a place-name: "And the sons of Israel journeyed from Beeroth Bene-jaakan to Moserah. There Aaron died, and there he was buried; and Eleazar his son served in the priest's office in his stead" (De 10:6). UPDV reads "Bene-jaakan" — "sons of Jaakan" — at the encampment between Beeroth and Moserah. The form of the name attached to the place is "Jaakan" rather than "Akan" in this verse.
