Alemeth

Topics · Updated 2026-05-06

The name Alemeth is borne in UPDV both by a Levitical city in Benjamin and by a man in the Saulide genealogy.

A Levitical City in Benjamin

Among the cities given out of Benjamin to the Aaronic priests, the Chronicler lists three: "and out of the tribe of Benjamin, Geba with its suburbs, and Allemeth with its suburbs, and Anathoth with its suburbs. All their cities throughout their families were thirteen cities" (1Ch 6:60). UPDV spells the city "Allemeth" here. Each city is given with its surrounding pasture-lands, fitting the standard Levitical-city pattern.

Son of Jehoaddah / Jarah

A second Alemeth appears two chapters later in the Saulide line: "And Ahaz begot Jehoaddah; and Jehoaddah begot Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begot Moza" (1Ch 8:36). The parallel list a chapter on names the same descendants but a slightly different father: "And Ahaz begot Jarah; and Jarah begot Alemeth, and Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri begot Moza" (1Ch 9:42). Whether the man was begotten of Jehoaddah or of Jarah, the three sons named after him — Alemeth, Azmaveth, Zimri — are the same in both lists, and Alemeth stands first.
