Alvan

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Alvan is a Horite clan name attached to the descendants of Seir in the Edomite genealogies. He appears once by that spelling and once under a variant.

Son of Shobal

Alvan is listed first among the sons of Shobal in the Horite line: "And these are the sons of Shobal: Alvan and Manahath and Ebal, Shepho and Onam" (Gen 36:23). The verse sits inside the broader register of Seir's descendants in Genesis 36, which catalogs the clans living in Edom alongside Esau's line.

The Variant Alian

The parallel register in Chronicles preserves the same family but with a slightly different opening name: "The sons of Shobal: Alian, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shephi, and Onam" (1Ch 1:40). The order and four following names track Genesis 36 closely; Alian stands where Alvan stood, and the same variation runs through several other names in the list (Shepho / Shephi). The two forms refer to the same person, with the Chronicler's spelling diverging from the Genesis form.
