Ammi

Topics · Updated 2026-05-07

Ammi, meaning "my people," is a name given to Israel in the prophetic vision of Hosea as a reversal of prior rejection. Where the name Lo-Ammi ("not my people") had signaled estrangement, the command to use Ammi signals restoration. In Hos 2:1, the prophet instructs: "Say⁺ to your⁺ brothers, Ammi; and to your⁺ sisters, Ruhamah." The paired name Ruhamah ("shown compassion") completes the restoration declaration: the people once rejected are again claimed and pitied.
