Amok

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Amok is the eponym of a priestly house that returns from exile and continues into the next generation. He appears only in the priestly registers of Nehemiah 12.

Priestly Chief at the Return

The roster of priests who came up "with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua" closes with four names: "Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, Jedaiah. These were the chiefs of the priests and of their brothers in the days of Jeshua" (Ne 12:7). Amok is one of the heads-of-house in that founding generation of post-exilic priestly leadership.

The Next Generation

A parallel list a few verses later names the heads of these same priestly houses in the following generation: "of Sallai, Kallai; of Amok, Eber;" (Ne 12:20). The house of Amok continues under Eber, paired in the list with the same neighboring houses that flanked it in the earlier register.
