Amzi
Two men named Amzi appear in the genealogies — one a Levite ancestor, the other a priestly ancestor in post-exilic Jerusalem. Both are recorded only as links in a chain.
A Levite Forefather
The first Amzi sits inside one of the long Levitical genealogies of Chronicles. His name appears in the descent line: "the son of Amzi, the son of Bani, the son of Shemer," (1Ch 6:46). The verse is part of a multi-generation chain naming the ancestry of one of the Merarite musicians appointed to service at the house of Yahweh.
A Priestly Forefather
The second Amzi belongs to the priestly genealogy of Adaiah, one of the priests resettled in Jerusalem after the exile: "and Adaiah the son of Jeroham, the son of Pelaliah, the son of Amzi, the son of Zechariah, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malchijah," (Ne 11:12). Adaiah's group is among the priests "who did the work of the house," and Amzi is recorded as one of his named ancestors in that priestly line.
