Anak

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Anak is named in the allotment narratives of Joshua as the father of three giants whose city Hebron is taken by Caleb. The notices that name him directly cluster around Kiriath-arba, the older name of Hebron.

Father of the Three at Hebron

Caleb's portion comes with the city formerly belonging to Anak's family: "And to Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a portion among the sons of Judah, according to the [Speech] of Yahweh to Joshua, even Kiriath-arba, [which Arba was] the father of Anak (the same is Hebron). And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak" (Jos 15:13-14).

In the Levitical Allotment

When the same city is reassigned to the priests as a Levitical city, the description repeats the genealogy: "And they gave them Kiriath-arba, [Arba was] the father of Anak (the same is Hebron), in the hill-country of Judah, with its suburbs round about it" (Jos 21:11).
