Ant

Topics · Updated 2026-05-06

The ant appears in only two passages of scripture, both in Proverbs and both treating the insect as a wisdom emblem. The ant is small, leaderless, and self-organizing — and on those grounds is held up as an instructor of the lazy and a model of foresight.

A Lesson for the Sluggard

The first passage is a direct summons addressed to the lazy: "Go to the ant, you sluggard; Consider her ways, and be wise" (Pr 6:6). The ant's example is striking precisely because she has no external authority compelling her work — "Which having no chief, Overseer, or ruler" (Pr 6:7) — and yet her labor is timed to the season: "Provides her bread in the summer, And gathers her food in the harvest" (Pr 6:8). The lesson is forethought: gathering when supply is available so that nothing is lacking later.

A Wise Small Thing

The second passage groups the ant with other small but exemplary creatures whose strength lies in habit rather than power: "The ants are not a strong people, Yet they provide their food in the summer" (Pr 30:25). The same observation as Pr 6 is repeated under a different rubric — weakness compensated by timely industry.
