Artemas

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Artemas is named in Paul's letter to Titus as one of two possible messengers Paul might send to Crete to relieve Titus so that Titus could travel to Nicopolis: "When I will send Artemas to you, or Tychicus, be diligent to come to me to Nicopolis: for there I have determined to winter" (Titus 3:12).

A Trusted Emissary

Paul mentions Artemas alongside Tychicus as interchangeable carriers of his mission — either man was capable of taking Titus's place in Crete while Titus joined Paul at Nicopolis. The pairing with Tychicus, who appears elsewhere in the Pauline letters as a trusted delegate (Eph 6:21; Col 4:7; 2 Tim 4:12), suggests Artemas held a comparable standing in Paul's network of co-workers, though no further details about him appear in the New Testament.
