Arza

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Arza appears once in the record of Israel's northern kingdom as the steward of the royal household in Tirzah during the reign of King Elah. His home became the scene of the conspiracy that ended Elah's dynasty: "And his slave Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him. Now he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, who was over the household in Tirzah" (1Ki 16:9).

The Steward of Tirzah

Arza held the position of household administrator in Tirzah, the capital of the northern kingdom under Elah. No genealogy or further biographical detail is given. His name surfaces only because Elah's assassination took place in his house, linking him to a pivotal moment in the succession of Israelite kings.
