Ashnah

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Two towns in the territory of Judah carry the name Ashnah. Both appear only in the same chapter of Joshua, where the boundaries and settlements of Judah's tribal allotment are listed. They are distinguished only by which district group each belongs to.

The Ashnah of the Northern Lowland

The first Ashnah is named at the head of a list of fourteen towns "in the lowland": "In the lowland, Eshtaol, and Zorah, and Ashnah" (Jos 15:33). The wider group runs through Zanoah, En-gannim, Tappuah, Enam, Jarmuth, Adullam, Socoh, Azekah, and on to Gederothaim — "fourteen cities with their villages" (Jos 15:34-36).

The Ashnah of the Southern Lowland Group

The second Ashnah falls within a later cluster of nine: "Libnah, and Ether, and Ashan, and Iphtah, and Ashnah, and Nezib, and Keilah, and Achzib, and Mareshah; nine cities with their villages" (Jos 15:42-44). Within that group, Ashnah is listed between Iphtah and Nezib (Jos 15:43).

The two occurrences exhaust what is said. The name appears twice in the allotment lists; nothing further is recorded of either town.
