Azaz
Azaz appears in the genealogical records of the tribe of Reuben as an ancestor of Bela, a clan-head who held territory in the Transjordanian highlands.
A Reubenite Ancestor
The Chronicler traces Bela's lineage back through Azaz and Shema to Joel within the tribe of Reuben: "and Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who dwelt in Aroer, even to Nebo and Baal-meon" (1Ch 5:8). The territorial note — Aroer, Nebo, and Baal-meon — describes the extent of Bela's settlement rather than Azaz's own activity. Azaz functions as a link in the genealogical chain that establishes Bela's tribal standing, without any independent narrative attached to his name.
