Azbuk

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Azbuk is known as the father of Nehemiah — not the governor, but a district official who contributed to the rebuilding of Jerusalem's wall.

Father of a Wall-Builder

Nehemiah's account of the wall reconstruction assigns each section to a named individual or group. One of these builders is identified by his father's name and administrative role: "After him repaired Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of half the district of Beth-zur, to the place across from the tombs of David, and to the pool that was made, and to the house of the mighty men" (Ne 3:16). Azbuk himself receives no other description; his son's governance over half the Beth-zur district places the family among Judah's regional leadership during the restoration period. The section of wall assigned to this Nehemiah covered landmarks of historical significance — David's tombs, a pool, and the house of the mighty men — making his contribution one of the more geographically notable segments in the repair list.
