Aziel

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Aziel was a Levitical musician appointed to play the psaltery when David organized the procession to bring the ark of God to Jerusalem.

A Musician in the Ark Procession

When David assembled the Levites for the transfer of the ark, he designated specific musicians for specific instruments. Aziel is listed among those assigned to the psalteries tuned to Alamoth — a higher register: "and Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries set to Alamoth" (1Ch 15:20). He appears in a group of eight players, all serving together in this ceremonial role. No further details of his lineage or activity are given; his name is preserved within the careful organization of Levitical worship that the Chronicler attributes to David's preparation for the temple era.
