Baale

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Baale, also called Baale-judah, is a city of Judah identified with Kiriath-jearim, the resting place of the ark of God before David brought it to Jerusalem. The name appears in the account of David's procession to retrieve the ark (2Sa 6:2).

The Ark Brought from Baale-Judah

When David assembled Israel to transfer the ark to Jerusalem, the narrative records that he "went with all the people who were with him, from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, who is called by the name: Yahweh of hosts who sits above the cherubim" (2Sa 6:2). The city's fuller form, Baale-judah, distinguishes it from other places bearing the element "Baal" and anchors it geographically within Judah's territory.
