Bagpipe

Topics · Updated 2026-05-07

The bagpipe appears in the instrument list commanded by Nebuchadnezzar for the dedication of his golden image. Among the required instruments — cornet, flute, harp, lyre, psaltery, and dulcimer — the assembled peoples were ordered to fall and worship whenever the music sounded (Dan 3:5).

The Instrument in Nebuchadnezzar's Court

The decree at the plain of Dura required every nation and language to respond to the full ensemble: "at what time you⁺ hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, lyre, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, you⁺ fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up" (Dan 3:5). The instrument appears as part of a deliberate spectacle of royal power, where music served as the trigger for required public homage.
