Bajith

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Bajith is a place in Moab associated with idolatrous worship, named in Isaiah's oracle against Moab as a site of mourning when judgment falls on the nation.

The Place in Isaiah's Oracle

In the lament over Moab, the site appears under its Hebrew form Ha-Bayith: "Ha-Bayith went up, and Dibon, to the high places to weep: Moab wails over Nebo, and over Medeba; on all their heads is baldness, every beard is cut off" (Isa 15:2). Ha-Bayith is named alongside Dibon as among those who go up to the high places in grief, placing it in the geography of Moabite religious life. The cutting of hair and beards marks the mourning rites accompanying the national catastrophe Isaiah announces.
