Bakbukiah

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Bakbukiah is a Levite of the post-exilic restoration whose name appears three times in Nehemiah. The references trace him through two distinct functions: leading praise alongside Mattaniah, and standing watch at the storehouse gates.

In the praise rotation

In the settlement-list of restored Jerusalem, Bakbukiah is paired with Mattaniah of the line of Asaph and given the second place in the praise leadership:

"and Mattaniah the son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who was the chief of praise, he led in prayer, and Bakbukiah, the second among his brothers; and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun." (Ne 11:17).

The companion notice in the next chapter places Bakbukiah and Unno opposite Mattaniah's group, ordered by their assigned duties:

"Also Bakbukiah and Unno, their brothers, were next to them according to their offices." (Ne 12:9).

At the storehouse gates

A later list shifts him into a different Levitical service — gatekeeping at the temple stores:

"Mattaniah, and Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, Akkub, were porters keeping the watch at the storehouses of the gates." (Ne 12:25).

The same pairing with Mattaniah carries across both lists, and the two roles together place Bakbukiah within the regular round of Levitical service in restoration-era Jerusalem.
