Barachel

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Barachel appears only as the father of Elihu, the youngest of the speakers in the book of Job. He is identified by tribal affiliation rather than by any narrative of his own.

Father of Elihu the Buzite

When Elihu enters the dialogue at Job 32, he is introduced by his lineage, and his anger at Job and at the three friends is framed in those terms: "Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified his soul rather than God" (Job 32:2). The same filiation opens Elihu's speech a few verses later, as he excuses his hesitation before older men: "And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and you⁺ are very old; Therefore I held back, and didn't dare show you⁺ my opinion" (Job 32:6). Through Elihu, Barachel is placed among the Buzites and the family of Ram; he appears nowhere else.
