Belteshazzar

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Belteshazzar is the Babylonian name given to Daniel during his training in the king's court.

A Name Given Daniel

Among the four young captives chosen for service, the chief eunuch reassigns names along with the curriculum: "And the prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave [the name of] Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, [of] Shadrach; and to Mishael, [of] Meshach; and to Azariah, [of] Abed-nego" (Da 1:7). The bracketed gloss in UPDV makes the renaming explicit; Daniel's Babylonian identity stands alongside his given Hebrew one for the rest of the book.
