Beth-arbel is invoked by the prophet Hosea as a byword for total devastation.

Hosea threatens Israel with a destruction modeled on the slaughter Shalman wrought at Beth-arbel — a defeat so brutal that mothers and children fell together: "Therefore will a tumult arise among your people, and all your fortresses will be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces with her sons" (Hos 10:14).
