Beth-Ezel

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Beth-ezel appears once in the Hebrew Bible, named in Micah's roll-call of mourning towns and identified as belonging to the territory of Judah.

A Town of the Territory of Judah

The site surfaces in the prophet's stylized lament over the Shephelah, set between Shaphir and Zaanan: "Pass by, O inhabitant of Shaphir, in nakedness and shame: the inhabitant of Zaanan has not come forth; the wailing of Beth-ezel will take from you⁺ its standing ground" (Mic 1:11). Its lament is stripped of any standing place from which to mourn.
