Beth-haggan

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Beth-haggan ("garden house") is the route by which Ahaziah king of Judah flees Jehu's revolt, rendered in UPDV by its English meaning rather than as a transliterated proper name. A related site, Engannim, appears in the allotment of Issachar.

The Way of the Garden-House

Ahaziah's flight from Jehu runs by way of this garden-house: "But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden-house. And Jehu followed after him, and said, 'Him too. Kill him.' [This happened] in the chariot at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there" (2Ki 9:27). The route runs near Ibleam toward Megiddo, where Ahaziah dies of the wound Jehu's men strike him with.

Engannim in Issachar's Allotment

The town list of Issachar includes a site whose name carries the same "spring of gardens" sense: "and Remeth, and Engannim, and En-haddah, and Beth-pazzez," (Jos 19:21). Engannim sits in Issachar's territory, in the same general region where Ahaziah's flight by the garden-house carries him on to Megiddo.
