Beth-jeshimoth
Beth-jeshimoth is a trans-Jordan town on the eastern side of the Jordan rift, situated in the plains of Moab near the northern shore of the Salt Sea. Across four passages it surfaces as a boundary marker — sometimes for the Israelite encampment before the entry into Canaan, sometimes for the territory taken from the Amorite kings, sometimes for the inheritance of Reuben, and once for the frontier of Moab in a prophetic oracle.
A Camp in the Plains of Moab
At the close of the wilderness itinerary, the camp at the Jordan is bounded by Beth-jeshimoth on one end and Abel-shittim on the other: "And they encamped by the Jordan, from Beth-jeshimoth even to Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab" (Nu 33:49). The town fixes one edge of the Israelite encampment opposite Jericho.
A Boundary in the Conquered Territory
In the survey of the kings whose lands fell to Israel east of the Jordan, Beth-jeshimoth marks a line along the Salt Sea: "the Arabah to the sea of Chinneroth, eastward, and to the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, eastward, the way to Beth-jeshimoth; and on the south, under the slopes of Pisgah" (Jos 12:3). The town appears here as a geographic point on the eastern Jordan-rift, paired with the slopes of Pisgah to the south.
Within the Inheritance of Reuben
When the trans-Jordan tribes receive their allotment, Beth-jeshimoth is listed among the towns assigned to Reuben alongside other sites in the same Moabite plain: "and Beth-peor, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth" (Jos 13:20). The grouping with Beth-peor and the slopes of Pisgah keeps the town tied to the same stretch of country named in the conquest narrative.
A Frontier City of Moab
In Ezekiel's oracle against Moab, Beth-jeshimoth reappears — now no longer in Israelite hands but counted among the frontier cities of Moab whose defenses are exposed in judgment: "therefore, look, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Beth-jeshimoth, Baal-meon, and Kiriathaim" (Eze 25:9). The same town that bounded the camp in Numbers and fell to Reuben in Joshua now stands again as a Moabite border town, listed with Baal-meon and Kiriathaim.
Variant Spelling
An alternate form "Beth-jesimoth" is sometimes attached to the Numbers reference; in the UPDV text of these four passages the spelling is uniformly "Beth-jeshimoth" (Nu 33:49; Jos 12:3; Jos 13:20; Eze 25:9).
