Beth-lebaoth

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Beth-lebaoth is a town of Simeon, listed in the territorial allotment within the larger inheritance of Judah. The same site appears under the shorter name Lebaoth in the parallel Judahite list, and probably under the name Beth-biri in the Chronicler's settlement record.

A Town of Simeon

The Simeonite allotment names Beth-lebaoth among the towns assigned to that tribe inside Judah's borders. "And Beth-lebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities with their villages" (Josh 19:6). The town belongs to Simeon's portion of the Negeb settlement.

Called Lebaoth

The Judahite town-list, working through the same southern region, gives the place its shorter form. "And Lebaoth, and Shilhim, and En-rimmon: all the cities are twenty and nine, with their villages" (Josh 15:32). Lebaoth and Beth-lebaoth are the same settlement counted under Judah's list and again under Simeon's allotment within Judah.

And Beth-biri

The Chronicler's settlement notice for the Simeonites names a Beth-biri among the towns held until David's reign. "And at Beth-marcaboth, and Hazar-susim, and at Beth-biri, and at Shaaraim. These were their cities to the reign of David" (1Chr 4:31). The umbrella links this to the same site as Beth-lebaoth / Lebaoth, surfacing the same Simeonite town under a third variant name.
