Bethabara

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Bethabara is a Jordan-crossing site east of the river. The same general region is associated with John's baptizing ministry, where the UPDV reads the place-name as Bethany beyond the Jordan in the critical text of John.

A Jordan Fording-Point

In the Gideon narrative, the Jordan crossing is named Beth-barah, the fording point Ephraim is summoned to seize: "And Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill-country of Ephraim, saying, Come down against Midian, and take the waters before them, as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan. So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and took the waters as far as Beth-barah, even the Jordan" (Judg 7:24). The place is fixed as a Jordan-crossing controlled by the tribe coming down out of the hill-country of Ephraim — a strategic ford along the river.

John's Baptizing Site — Bethany Beyond the Jordan

In the Fourth Gospel the site of John the Baptist's testimony to Jesus' messiahship and his baptizing is placed beyond the Jordan, named in UPDV as Bethany: "These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing" (John 1:28). The geography attaches the Baptist's ministry to a specific east-Jordan locale.

Jesus' Withdrawal to the Same Place

After conflict in Jerusalem Jesus withdraws to the place of John's earlier baptizing: "Therefore they sought again to take him: and he went forth out of their hand. And he went away again beyond the Jordan into the place where John was at the first baptizing; and there he stayed. And many came to him; and they said, John indeed did no sign: but all things whatever John spoke of this man were true. And many believed on him there" (John 10:39-42). The site is designated by relation rather than by name — "beyond the Jordan ... where John was at the first baptizing" — and becomes a refuge where many believe.
