Bether
Bether appears once in the Hebrew Bible, named in the Song of Solomon's closing image and identified with mountains.
Mountains of Bether
The name surfaces in the beloved's invitation at the end of the song's second movement, where the lover is summoned to bound back over rugged terrain like a young hart: "Until the day is cool, and the shadows flee away, Turn, my beloved, and be like a roe or a young hart On the mountains of Bether" (So 2:17). The mountains supply the figure for the swift return.
