Bethzatha
Bethzatha is a pool in Jerusalem located by the sheep gate, described in John 5:2 as having five porches: "there is in Jerusalem by the sheep [gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethzatha, having five porches." UPDV adopts the spelling Bethzatha as the critically preferred Hebrew place name over the traditional rendering Bethesda.
The pool is the setting for Jesus's healing of a man who had been ill for thirty-eight years (John 5:1–9). UPDV omits verses 3b–4, which describe an angel stirring the water, treating that material as a later addition not original to the text.
