Bileam

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Bileam is a town in the territory of the half-tribe of Manasseh. It is the same site listed elsewhere under the names Ibleam and Gath-rimmon. Bileam the place is distinct from the prophet Balaam.

A Town of Manasseh

Bileam appears in the Chronicler's list of Levitical cities given to the Kohathites out of Manasseh: "and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Aner with its suburbs, and Bileam with its suburbs, for the rest of the family of the sons of Kohath" (1Ch 6:70).

Called Ibleam

In Joshua's record of Manasseh's holdings within Issachar and Asher, the same site appears under the form Ibleam: "And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher Beth-shean and its towns, and Ibleam and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, the third height" (Josh 17:11).

Gath-Rimmon

The corresponding entry in Joshua's Levitical-cities list pairs Taanach with Gath-rimmon out of the half-tribe of Manasseh: "And out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with its suburbs; two cities" (Josh 21:25). Gath-rimmon stands in the same Manasseh slot occupied by Bileam in the Chronicles parallel.
